Istikhara is one of the greatest gifts Allah has given the believer. When facing a significant decision — like marriage — Istikhara is a tool for seeking guidance from the One who knows all.

What Istikhara Is Not

Istikhara is not a dream oracle. Many Muslims wait for a specific dream or feeling after making Istikhara, and then feel confused when nothing dramatic happens. The Prophet ﷺ did not describe Istikhara as producing a vision — he described it as asking Allah to make the matter easy if it is good, and to remove it if it is not.

How to Perform Istikhara

Pray two rak'ahs of voluntary prayer. After completing the prayer, recite the dua of Istikhara with full presence of heart, mentioning the specific matter you are seeking guidance about. Then proceed with your best judgement, trusting that Allah will facilitate what is good.

Signs After Istikhara

Watch for how circumstances unfold, how you feel over the following days, and what becomes easy or difficult. Ease and opening of doors is often a sign of khair. Persistent obstacles may be a sign to reconsider.
