What Is Nikah and Why Does It Matter?

Nikah is one of the most significant acts of worship a Muslim can perform. Unlike the secular concept of marriage as a social contract, Nikah is an act of ibadah — a means of drawing closer to Allah.
The Meaning of Nikah
The word "Nikah" in Arabic refers to the marriage contract in Islam. It is a solemn covenant (mithaq) between a man and a woman, witnessed by at least two people, and formalised with the payment of a mahr (dowry) to the bride.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "There is nothing like marriage for two who love each other." (Ibn Majah)
Why Intention Matters
Like all acts of worship, the intention behind seeking marriage determines its reward. If you seek Nikah to fulfil half your deen, protect yourself from haram, and build a family that worships Allah — that intention itself is an act of worship.
The Process
Traditional Islamic marriage involves several steps: the proposal (khitbah), the involvement of the wali (guardian), agreement on the mahr, the Nikah contract itself, and the walimah (wedding feast). Each of these steps has wisdom behind it.
